Clearing the way

The demolition of Fisher-Nickell Hall on the east side of campus actually is a last component of the Hixson-Lied Student Success Center, which opened spring semester 2007. Fisher-Nickell's final tenants, the staff of the ISU Alumni Association, moved to their new facility on Beach Avenue last month, clearing the way for the demolition, which occurred in the rain and fog of Aug. 12-13.

Prior to demolition, environmental health and safety crews completed asbestos abatement (including foor tiles and roof shingles), and removed and disposed of items containing mercury. The building's outer brick wall was removed separately for recycling (second image). The hole left by the building's basement will be filled with dirt stockpiled from construction on the Vet Med campus.

Landscaping plans for the site include additional parking for Hixson-Lied and a rain garden to filter water runoff from the lot. Photos by Bob Elbert.
