Regalia
More than 3,000 to receive diplomas

First look at new regalia

Spring 2008 Ph.D. graduates will be the first to wear Iowa State's new academic regalia. The change is one of several made to the commencement ceremony during the sesquicentennial year.

The gown reflects Iowa State's tradition and colors: cardinal red with matching black velvet front panels, each decorated with a chevron containing the campanile, a university symbol. Also new this spring for Ph.D.s is an eight-sided black velvet tam with a gold silk tassel. The design was recommended by a committee of faculty and staff from various parts of the university.

"A number of our sister universities have done similar things to commemorate special occasions. It's a nice addition to our academic attire for the doctoral students," associate provost David Holger said when showing the regalia to faculty senators in March.

The robe and tam will be required attire for Ph.D. students at Graduate College commencement ceremonies. Students and alumni holding a Ph.D. from Iowa State can purchase (about $650) or rent (about $80) the new gown and tam through the University Book Store. Photo by Bob Elbert.
