Birthday party moves to statehouse

by Diana Pounds

Iowa State will take its 150th birthday celebration to the state capitol on Thursday, April 3.

The date has been designated ISU Sesquicentennial Day at the Legislature.

Legislators will have the opportunity to visit some 25 Iowa State exhibits on the first-floor rotunda of the statehouse.

The exhibits will highlight 150 years of university service to the state. Research on the bioeconomy, schools of the future, thriving Iowa communities and health issues will be just a few of the topics on display, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Current Iowa lawmakers will be asked to sign a reproduction of the legislative act first signed by legislators 150 years ago. The legislation established the Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm (the forerunner of Iowa State University) on March 22, 1858. Gov. Chet Culver will ink the reproduction at 10:30 a.m.

President Gregory Geoffroy will host breakfast and lunch for Iowa legislators, Gov. Culver and Lt. Gov. Patty Judge.

Birthday cake will be served in the rotunda from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
