Snow on campus

When flakes fly

by Erin Rosacker

Have a bet placed in the office pool on the date of this year's first snowfall? Last winter, Ames recorded an inch of the white stuff on Nov. 10. As the inevitable draws nearer, here is a refresher on what you need to know when inclement weather strikes:

  • If the weather seems questionable, check the university Web site for up-to-date information on the university's status, or call the campus information center at 4-4357. Radio and television outlets also will carry notifications on closures -- but remember that cancellation of classes does not always mean university offices are closed.
  • If classes are canceled, but the university is not officially closed, it's business as usual. Employees who are unable to make it to work need to contact their immediate supervisors. Employees may request to make up the time, use vacation time or take leave without pay. Staff members covered by collective bargaining agreements should refer to the language in the severe weather portion of the contract.
  • If the university is officially closed, that means classes are canceled and university offices are closed. Employees working in important operational areas (security, food service, power plant, etc.) need to follow that area's specific procedures. Some staff members may elect to work their regular hours despite the closure (pending supervisor approval).

Parking policies

Although crews strive to have snow cleared from campus sidewalks, streets and parking lots by 7:30 a.m., Mother Nature doesn't always cooperate. If your regular parking area is inaccessible or still needs to be cleared, these designated areas will be available:

  • Lots A3, A4, B5 and B6 in the southwest corner of the Iowa State Center (CyRide's Orange route runs every five to 10 minutes, free of charge)
  • Lots 29 and 30, north of the Molecular Biology Building
  • Lot 41, north of the General Services Building
