'Road Scholar' tour returns

by Erin Rosacker

President Gregory Geoffroy will resurrect ISU's Road Scholar tour, accompanying more than 30 new faculty and staff members to stops throughout central and north central Iowa on Oct. 25.

Designed to familiarize university newcomers with the state of Iowa, the group -- an even mix of faculty and staff -- will travel by bus through a daylong itinerary of visits, guided by ISU Extension staff and area leaders.

The tour starts with a trip to a State Center farm followed by presentations at the high school and a community center in Marshalltown. The group will have lunch during a Scenic City Empress riverboat cruise in Iowa Falls, followed by a tour of a local ethanol plant. The trip wraps up in Mason City, where group members will visit North Iowa Area Community College and attend an alumni reception before dinner.

"We brought back the 'Road Scholar' Tour because it's such a great way to introduce our new faculty and staff to Iowa, and to let the people of Iowa meet some of the outstanding people we're bringing to Iowa State," Geoffroy said. "It gets our new faculty and staff out into Iowa - outside of Ames - and lets them see and experience some of the great things about life in Iowa. And the name is so clever that we decided to keep it."

The Road Scholar tours began in 1992 with fall and spring outings. This is the first trip since April 2001.
