Iowa State is getting lots of use out of its new warehouse facility off Airport Road and east of the research park.

The former "Sevde Relocation" facility is a two-winged building with a combined 20,000 square feet of storage space, plus office areas. Iowa State bought the building following the sale last fall of its warehouse facility on East Fifth Street.

As you face the building, ISU Surplus is on the left; the right side is used for university storage. New furniture purchases also are received and processed on the storage side. And, for the occasional shopper at the Wednesday surplus sales, May 23 was the date of the first sale in the new location.

This month, the warehouse also has been the staging area for what likely will balloon to about 40 pallets of used computer equipment for recycling. (That's two semi-trailers worth.) Iowa State is participating in a free computer recycling program offered by the Apple computer corporation that ends June 28. ISU Surplus, a division of Central Stores, is one of about a half dozen campus units coordinating it.

Iowa State still owns the old 33,000-square-foot ice arena south of the Towers residence halls. It, too, is used for storage by university departments and units, but isn't staffed full-time like the other facility.

Signs are posted on Wednesdays for the surplus sale (12-3 p.m.): From Airport Road, turn on South Riverside Drive to Southern Hills Drive. The warehouse is located next to Highway 30, behind the Sevde storage units.

Queue up; happy shopping.
