Stephens adds summer series

The Iowa State Center has announced a short summer series at Stephens Auditorium. A touring group from Second City Comedy Troupe will perform Saturday, July 21; and Rockapella will give a concert Friday, July 27.

Tickets for both shows go on sale at 10 a.m. April 27 through Ticketmaster. Tickets for either show are $27.50 ($17.50 for ISU students and youth 18 years and younger).

The Chicago-based Second City also has theaters in Detroit, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York City and Toronto. For more than 40 years, Second City has taken its original comedy revue on the road. Their alumni list reads like a "Who's Who" of American comedy, including Steve Carell, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Bill Murray and Mike Myers.

In Ames, the troupe will perform a two-act sketch review with the third act completely improvised. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m.

Rockapella has its roots in the late 1980s, when four alumni of Brown University in Providence, R.I., started singing a cappella on street corners in New York City. The group today features five vocalists, including a "vocal percussionist" (or mouth drummer). Their music blends soul, rock, R&B and jazz.

The Rockapella concert also begins at 7:30 p.m.

Both summer series events will be preceded by a social starting at 6 p.m., also in Stephens. It will feature complimentary wine tasting from Iowa wineries, a cash bar and food concessions.
