Creating e-mail class list is easy, useful

Once in a while, even the instructor can't make it to class. The culprit could be the flu, a road buried in snow, a delayed flight, or something else.

Fortunately, Iowa State instructors have a quick, easy way to create e-mail class lists. These lists allow instructors to instantly send all kinds of messages, including the occasional cancellation, to their students.

It only takes about five minutes to set up an e-mail class list. However, the list doesn't work until the following day, so it's wise to create the list early in the semester, before it's needed.

Here's how to create a class list. (If you have questions or need assistance, contact the Solution Center at 4-4000.)

  • Go to https://asw.iastate.edu/ and sign in. (If you've forgotten your password, you'll need to contact the Solution Center, 195 Durham Center to reset it.)
  • Click "manage lists," then "create a class list."
  • You'll see a list of your own classes - no one else's.
  • Select the class for which you want to create a mail list. (You can create mail lists for more than one class at a time by shift-clicking or control-clicking on additional classes.)

The list, which will be named something like "s2007.engl.333," will be ready for use the next day. Using the example above, the instructor would send mail to s2007.engl.333@iastate.edu to reach everyone in the class.
