Feb. 23, 2007 It's Sweepstakes weekendSeveral weeks of preliminary rounds in Iowa State's annual student talent competition have led up to the 76th Varieties Sweepstakes performances, which will be held Feb. 23-24 in the Memorial Union Great Hall. The field has been narrowed to the top three skits and the top three vignettes - vocalists "Shy of a Dozen," a step group from Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and guitarist Pat Downes - for a night of original entertainment. The emcees awarded the job for the sweepstakes round are "Four Engineers and the Girl They Could Never Get." The final skits, which are written, choreographed, produced and performed by students, are called "The Games We Play," "Ever After Academy" and "Kitchen Catastrophe." Hundreds of students competed this month and last to make it to the sweepstakes round, where they will compete to be a Varieties champion. Performances begin at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, and 6:30 and 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24. Tickets are $10 ($8 for students) and available at the MU main desk, at the door or through the MU ticket line, 4-8439. |
