frosty trees

Summary

Icy trees

Sycamore trees that line the bike path near the ISU power plant ice up with water vapor coming out of the cooling towers during cold weather. Even though these trees get an extra wintery dose of ice, it won't hurt them unless there's enough to weigh the branches down, said Iowa State Extension horticulture specialist Richard Jauron. Sycamores, known for their hugeness, can be recognized by their distinctive white bark. Photo by Bob Elbert.
