Opportunities with non-profits

The Social Services Volunteer and Career Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26, in the Memorial Union Great Hall. About 40 representatives from Central Iowa non-profit organizations will be on hand to talk about volunteering, internships and full-time employment. Walking taco sale

Iowa State Dance Marathon will hold its annual walking tacos fund-raiser from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26, on central campus. Tickets are $3. Proceeds support the Children's Miracle Network and Children's Hospital of Iowa. This year's Dance Marathon is Jan. 20, 2007.

Road Less Traveled fall conferences

ISU's Program for Women in Science and Engineering announces its fall career conference schedule for "Taking the Road Less Traveled," one-day sessions to expose middle and high school girls to careers in science, technology, engineering and math. The sessions take place at the Memorial Union on Oct. 12, (high school, grades 9-12); Oct. 19 and 26, (middle school, grades 6-9). Entrepreneurship grants available

One-time grant funds for faculty and staff have been made available by the Kauffman Foundation and the Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship. Grants for new or updated programs to advance entrepreneurship at ISU can include curriculum, program, student mentoring or awareness. Maximum awards are $5,000 and matching funds are required. To apply, e-mail Judi Eyles (eyles@iastate.edu). Applications are due Nov. 15.

Library workshops

The library offers two October workshops for faculty and researchers. Registration is required, due to a limited number of computers. To register, contact Lorrie Pellack, pellack@iastate.edu, 4-5569. The workshops are:

  • "Web of Science Basics," Oct. 17 (9-10 a.m.) or Oct. 18 (3:15-4:15 p.m.), a hands-on introduction to the Web of Science database, which contains Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index and the Arts & Humanities Citation Index.
  • "Cited Reference Searching Beyond the Web of Science," Oct. 24 (9-10 a.m.) or Oct. 25 (3:15-4:15 p.m.), alternative resources and techniques for locating cited reference information. Those who have authored papers can document use of their scholarship by peers; those who are using research articles and tutorials can research how these sources are being used and by whom.

New discounts on Dell products

Dell has established new educational discounts on selected laptop and desktop computers that will be in effect until April 30, 2007. Discounts are available to students, faculty, staff and university departments via Tech CYte in the University Book Store.

Dell and the regents institutions will re-evaluate this pricing structure and develop a revised structure to be in effect May 1, 2007. Iowa State reserves the right to opt out of this or similar programs beginning May 1. Questions should be directed to Mike Broders, 4-2028, mbroders@iastate.edu.
