Happy Birthday, Wolfgang

Iowa State Center will observe the 250th anniversary of the birth of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with an all-Mozart concert Feb. 23 by the acclaimed Polish Chamber Orchestra and featuring flutist/conductor James Galway and flutist Jeanne Galway.

The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in Stephens. Tickets are $46.50 and $50.50 ($24.50 and $26.50 for ISU students and those 18 years and younger) and available through TicketMaster, including the Stephens ticket office.

Prior to the concert, the Ames International Orchestra Festival Association (AIOFA) will host an overture dinner at the Scheman Building. The evening begins with a social at 5 p.m., buffet dinner at 5:30 p.m. and a pre-concert program at 6:30 p.m. by Joseph Giunta, music director and conductor of the Des Moines Symphony.

Dinner tickets are $17.50 and available at the Stephens ticket office.

As another prelude to the concert, AIOFA will host a lecture about Mozart at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, in the auditorium of the Ames Public Library, 515 Douglas Ave.

Local musician Joe Matson will explore the life, times and music of Mozart. His talk is free and open to the public. A pair of concert tickets will be given away at the lecture.
