Research mentors sought

The Program for Women in Science and Engineering is looking for mentors among faculty, staff and affiliate researchers for the 2006 Undergraduate Summer Internship Program. Information about how the program is funded, selection process, expectations and benefits to both mentor and intern, and the Mentor Interest Form are online at http://www.pwse.iastate.edu/faculty/internships.html. Open forum for director candidate

Brenda Daly (University Professor, English), a candidate for the director's position in the Center for Excellence in the Arts and Humanities, will speak and answer questions at an open forum from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, in 3150 Beardshear. Refreshments will be served.

Toys sought for toy drive

ISU's NROTC (Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps) is collecting new, unwrapped toys and cash contributions for the Toys for Tots program through 5 p.m. Dec. 21. Collection boxes are located by 3 Armory and 4-1 Armory. At Christmas, with the assistance of church groups and local community agencies, the toys will be distributed to needy children. The Toys for Tots Foundation is an IRS-recognized, not-for-profit charity; contributions are 100 percent tax deductible. Documentation of donations will be provided upon request (call 4-6050).

Where to park on snowy mornings

Faculty and staff are asked to park their vehicles in one of three areas this winter when heavy or late-falling snow prevents facilities staff from clearing major streets, sidewalks and parking areas by 7:30 a.m. The alternate parking spots are:

  • SW corner of Iowa State Center (Lots A3, A4, B5, B6)
  • North of Molecular Biology (Lots 29, 30)
  • North of the General Services Building (Lot 41)

Calligraphy presentation

Aili Mu, ISU Chinese studies, will give a presentation, "Chinese Calligraphy: Language as Art and Language through Art," from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, in 1105 Pearson. Mu is the first recipient of the Jeoraldean McClain Faculty Fellowship in Art History.

Farewell to a colleague

The Inside staff bids farewell to associate editor Linda Charles, who helped launch this publication in 1992 (and toiled over its predecessor, University News). Charles is retiring from Iowa State on Dec. 9.
