Postcard exhibit to raise funds for students

by Heather Sauer, Design communications

Postcards from 205 artists from six countries are on display during the 5th annual University Print Society's Postcard Print Exchange Exhibition at the College of Design's Gallery 181.

"Beauty I," 2005, color reduction linocut by Malenka Kaydan, Ashland, Ohio. Submitted photo.

Last spring, printmakers were invited to interpret the theme "Forces of Nature" using printmaking techniques like woodcuts, litho, intaglio, photography, silkscreen and digital. Artists from Australia, Canada, Ireland, Latvia, United Arab Emirates and the United States responded.

The artists submitted 13 identical prints to art and design associate professor April Katz, University Print Society faculty adviser. Twelve prints will be distributed to other contributing artists and one print became part of the exhibit. The prints were mailed separately as postcards so they would bear the markings of travel and the postal service.

The postcards in the exhibit will be sold through a silent auction to help the society's student members attend the Southern Graphics Council conference in Madison, Wis., next April. The conference is the world's largest gathering of printmakers and provides an opportunity for students to participate in portfolio presentations, meet graduate school faculty and attend lectures, panels and exhibits.

Bidding on the prints will continue through Monday, Nov. 7. The bidding process is described at the exhibit.

Gallery 181 is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free. For more information, contact Katz, 4-3363, or Heather Sauer, 4-9289.
