Gartner to address graduating students

Pulitzer Prize winner Michael Gartner, president of the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, will deliver the summer commencement address during the Aug. 6 ceremony.

Almost 1,000 degrees will be awarded during the single ceremony, which will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Hilton Coliseum. Individual college ceremonies are not held prior to the summer commencement.

During the ceremony, an estimated 596 students will receive bachelor's degrees, 283 will receive master's and 106 will receive Ph.D. s. All graduating students will walk across the stage and be greeted by President Gregory Geoffroy or Provost Benjamin Allen and their college deans.

Gartner, a lifelong journalist and principal owner the Iowa Cubs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, began his six-year term with the regents in May.

He has been Page One editor of The Wall Street Journal, editor and president of The Des Moines Register, editor of the Louisville Courier-Journal, general news executive of Gannett Co. and USA Today, and president of NBC News. In 1997, as editor and co-owner of the Ames Tribune, he won the Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing.

He also is a member of the bar in New York and Iowa.

From 2000 to 2005, Gartner was chairman of Vision Iowa, the state board charged with helping to fund building of recreation, education, cultural and entertainment facilities and attractions in communities across Iowa.
