Internal search for associate vice provost for research

Nominations and applications are sought for the position of associate vice provost for research. The position is available Sept. 1, and applications are due by Friday, Aug. 5. New grad student reception

The Graduate College will host a come-and-go reception for new graduate students from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 19, in 1137 Pearson. Representatives from Parks Library and Student Health Center will be available to answer questions about their services. There will be door prizes, including $50 gift certificates, every 30 minutes. Draft policy: Social Security Number Protection

Iowa State officials have drafted a policy on the protection of Social Security numbers and invite your comments through Aug. 1. The university is committed to maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of Social Security numbers. The proposed policy applies to all individuals and university units that have access to, collect, or use an individual's SSN. See the SSN Protection draft policy at http://policy.iastate.edu/drafts.

Weight reduction meetings for employees

A weekly weight reduction meeting is held from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays at the ISU Foundation, 2505 Elwood Dr. All ISU employees are welcome. The contact person is Jenny Barrett, 4-1052, e-mail: jennyb@foundation.iastate.edu.

Open forums for radio finalists

Open forums have been scheduled for two finalists for the executive director post of Iowa Public Radio. Each forum will be held from 11 a.m. to noon in Studio B, Communications Building. The dates are:

  • July 21, Cindy Browne, Minnesota-based public broadcasting consultant and former VP for the Corp. for Public Broadcasting
  • July 25, John Stark, general manager, KNAU-FM, Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff

New hours at Hazel's Kitchen

Beginning in August, Hazel's Kitchen at Reiman Gardens will be open daily for lunch (11 a.m.-2 p.m.). During the remaining garden hours, vending machine snacks and beverages will be available (9-11 a.m. and 2-4:30 p.m.).

Students offer their services

As part of Destination Iowa State, new ISU students will offer their services to departments and programs from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20. Services may include painting, planting, decorating and other office or creative projects. Contact Jennifer Farrell, 4-0801, to benefit from this project.

Call for proposals

The NASA Iowa Space Grant Consortium is soliciting proposals for long-term student projects that involve students in research and make connections with NASA centers and research activities. December shutdown for MATLAB on 'isua'

The number of clients using MATLAB from the "isua" server has dwindled to a handful. IT Services intends to discontinue the service on Dec. 19. More information is available online at http://www.it.iastate.edu/news/showitem.php?id=73.

South Fourth closed July 23 for all-star game

The Iowa Shrine All-Star Football Game will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 23 at the Jack Trice Stadium. South Fourth Street will be closed between Elwood Drive and Beach Avenue from 4 p.m. through the completion of the game. Tickets are $10 at the gate (children under 6 free).
