Council endorses strategic plan

by Anne Krapfl

In a 31-1 vote, the Professional and Scientific Council on Jan. 6 endorsed Iowa State's proposed strategic plan for 2005-10. Prior to the vote, there was a short discussion about whether the proposed plan acknowledges the role of P&S employees, particularly continuing P&S employees.

Council member Trevor Riedemann, Ames Lab assistant scientist, argued the proposed plan ignores the process of developing and promoting current employees in favor of "hiring the best."

Other members said the plan is an improvement because the language is more inclusive. They said some past plans implied that only faculty played important roles at Iowa State.

"This is better. We're moving in the right direction," said Penny Rice, women's center director.

In other business, Dan Woodin and Cathy Good were elected president and president-elect of the council for 2005-06. They will be seated at the end of the council's June meeting. Woodin is an information systems leader in Administrative Technology Services and Good is a program coordinator in administrative services for the College of Agriculture and Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station.

Woodin also served back-to-back terms as council president in 1992-1994.

Online elections for 17 vacancies on the 35-member council will be held March 1-25.
