Best paper

Zhengdao Wang, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, is a co-author on a paper that has received the 2004 Marconi Best Paper Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. The paper reports on a new transmission encoding scheme based on algebraic number theory designed for high-rate wireless communications using multiple antennas.

Master teacher

Stephen Pett, associate professor of English, was named the Jerry Shake-shaft Master Teacher in Humanities and Social Sciences for 2004-05 in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Distinguished research

Three faculty members from Parks Library -- Jeffrey Kushkowski, business and economics bibliographer; Kathy Parsons, head of stacks and service desks; and William Wiese, veterinary medical librarian -- have received the 2004 Jesse H. Shera Award for Distinguished Published Research, sponsored by the Library Research Round Table of the American Library Association. Their article, published in Portal: Libraries and the Academy, examined citation patterns in graduate theses and dissertations over a 20-year period and found that regardless of discipline, students cite current materials in their thesis bibliographies. The finding challenges the widely held notion that scholars in social science and humanities disciplines cite older materials than their peers in the sciences.
