Four to interview in Vet Med dean search

Four candidates for dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine will visit campus beginning March 25.

"The search committee was fortunate to have an outstanding pool of candidates," said College of Agriculture Dean Catherine Woteki, who chaired the search committee.

The candidates are Dr. Warwick Arden, professor and head of veterinary clinical medicine, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign; Dr. Bradley Fenwick, chief science adviser/chief scientist -- research, education and economics, U.S. Department of Agriculture and professor and director of the pathobiology graduate program at Kansas State University, Manhattan; Dr. Eleanor Myers Green, professor and chair of large animal clinical sciences, and chief of staff, Large Animal Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, University of Florida, Gainesville; and Dr. Laura Jill McCutcheon, acting associate vice president for academic affairs, University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada.

Fenwick will interview on March 25 and 26; Green on March 31 and April 1; Arden on April 6 and 7; and McCutcheon on April 8 and 9.

An open forum with each of the candidates will be from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. in 2226 Vet Med on the first day of their visits. A reception will follow each forum in the Fish Tank Lobby.

In addition, an open discussion on diversity will be from 3 to 3:45 p.m. in 2542 Vet Med (Alumni Room) on the second day of each candidate's visit.

Dr. Norman Cheville will retire as dean at the end of the academic year.

Arden has been at the University of Illinois since 2000. From 1990 to 1998, he was on the faculty of the University of Kentucky, most recently as associate professor of surgery and physiology, and director of the surgical research program in the surgery department. From 1983 to 1990, Arden was with the department of large animal clinical sciences at Michigan State University. Arden earned his D.V.M. from the University of Sydney, Australia, in 1981. At Michigan State, he completed his residency in large animal surgery in 1986. Arden was board certified in veterinary surgery in 1990, and earned a doctoral degree in physiology and biophysics from the University of Kentucky in 1993.

Fenwick has been with USDA since 2002. He is the chief science adviser/chief scientist for the Cooperative State Research and Education Services and manages the competitive programs unit and the National Research Initiative-Competitive Grants program. He also chairs the U.S. Microbe Project, a federal interagency working group, and is editor of the Journal of Clinical Microbiology. He has been on the faculty at Kansas State since 1988. Fenwick earned his D.V.M. from Kansas State in 1981, and his doctoral degree in comparative pathology from the University of California, Davis, in 1985.

Green has been professor and chair of large animal clinical sciences and chief of staff, Large Animal Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital, at the University of Florida since 1996. Previously she was professor and head of large animal clinical sciences and director of the Large Animal Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at the University of Tennessee (1991-96). She was on the faculty of the University of Missouri's Middelbush Equine Center (1984-1991), and Mississippi State (1977-1984). She earned her D.V.M. from Auburn University (1973).

McCutcheon has been on the pathobiology department faculty at the University of Guelph since 1990, and was assistant dean (1994-2003) and acting dean (2002-2003). McCutcheon currently is acting associate vice president for academic affairs at the university. She was a Medical Research Council of Canada fellow at Washington State University from 1985 to 1990. From 1994 to 1996, she was a scientific adviser to the Federation Equestrienne Internationale and the Atlanta Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games, and a member of the Olympic veterinary monitoring team. She earned her D.V.M. from the University of Guelph (1983) and her doctoral degree from Washington State (1990).
