Enjoy an evening of Tchaikovsky by Moscow symphony

The Moscow State Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus will present an evening of music by one of the Russian greats, Peter Tchaikovsky, Friday, Feb. 27, in C.Y. Stephens Auditorium. The group includes a 90-person orchestra and a 60-member chorus. On this tour, the group is directed by conductor Sergey Kondrashev of Moscow's Bolshoi Theater.

ISU student singers, selected from the Statesmen and Lyrica choirs, will join the chorus for the program's finale, the 1812 Overture. The Moscow chorus' assistant conductor arrived early in Ames to assist at the final student rehearsals.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. At 7 p.m., Jeffrey Prater, ISU professor of music and chair of the music theory division, will give a short preview on Tchaikovsky and his contributions to the late 19th-century literature for symphony orchestra. This free talk will be in the Celebrity Caf area on the ground floor of Stephens.

Styled after the BBC Symphony Orchestra's radio series in the United Kingdom, the Moscow State Radio Symphony and Chorus was founded in 1978 to provide weekly broadcasts of great Russian music. The group's season in Moscow runs for 36 weeks.

Tickets, $33.50 to $41.50, are available through TicketMaster, including the box office at Stephens.
