Stewart named DPS interim director

Jerry Stewart, associate director of the department of public safety (DPS), has been named interim director of the department.

Stewart's appointment, effective Aug. 15, comes after the announcement that Loras Jaeger will step down from the director's position to become chief of the Ames Police Department.

Stewart has been associate director of DPS since 1990. Stewart also served with the Cedar Falls Police Department as police officer, investigator and patrol supervisor, and taught for several years in public school systems in North Dakota and Waterloo.

Stewart earned a B.S. in secondary education from Dickinson State University, North Dakota, and an M.S. in criminal justice from the University of Alabama. He also is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

A national search for a new director will begin soon.
