INSIDE IOWA STATE March 30, 2001 Candidates visit campusCandidates for director of the Plant Sciences Institute's Laurence H. Baker Center for Bioinformatics and Biological Statistics and the Center for Designing Foods to Improve Nutrition will be on campus in April and May. Following is information about their campus visits. News releases about the candidates are available online at http://www.iastate.edu/news/releases/2001/2001.shtml.Baker Center The candidates are Naomi Altman, associate professor of biometrics, Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.; Volker Brendel, associate professor of zoology and genetics, Iowa State; Robert Jernigan, chief of the section on molecular structure, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Md.; and Hal Stern, interim director of the Baker Center and professor of statistics, Iowa State. The candidates give public presentations on their research at 10 a.m. in the Howe Hall auditorium and their visions of future directions for the center at 1:10 p.m. in the Ensminger Room, Kildee (unless otherwise noted). The candidates are Casimir Akoh, professor of food science and tech-nology at the University of Georgia, Athens; Sung Koo, professor of human nutrition at Kansas State University, Manhattan; Jay Whelan, associate professor of nutrition at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville; and Dennis Gordon, professor of cereal science at North Dakota State University, Fargo.
