Roe keynotes staff professional day

by Anne Krapfl

A keynote address on how to be a leader - and bring people along with you - highlights the second annual professional development day for Extension and Professional and Scientific staff Tuesday, April 17, at the Starlite Village, East 13 Street.

Registration for "Navigate into the Future" opens at 7:30 a.m., and activities begin at 8:30 a.m. The event ends with an ice cream social at 3 p.m. For the second year, it is jointly sponsored by the P&S Council and Iowa State's Council of Extension Professionals.

David Roe, Central College's president since 1998 and formerly CEO of several financial organizations, will give a talk on leadership at 9 a.m. A graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, a Rhodes scholar and 24-year career officer with the Air Force, Roe also spent 10 years in leadership positions with companies like USAA, San Antonio; United Services Life Co., Arlington, Va.; and Reliastar, Minneapolis. He leads leadership training for Iowa community leaders and volunteers.

Miss Iowa 2000, Theresa Uchytil, a former baton twirler with the ISU marching band and 1998 graduate of Iowa State in speech communication, also will do a motivational presentation during the day. Gov. Tom Vilsack has been invited to speak but (at press time), his staff had not yet confirmed his visit.

The day also will include two workshops, during which participants will choose from among seven presentations. Topics include problem solving, retirement planning, wellness, improvisation as a team-building tool, using PowerPoint software, promoting youth development and an overview of the P&S classification process.

Registration is $50 through April 3; then $65. The registration form is on the event's Web site at http://www.lifelearner.iastate.edu/conference/professionaldev.htm. Questions may be directed to co-chairs, Josie Six, 4-8920, or Ann Pisarik, (515) 261-4218.
