Confer interviews for Vet Med post

Dr. Anthony Wayne Confer, one of two candidates for dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, visited campus March 27-29.

Confer is associate dean of research and graduate education at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater. He also is professor of veterinary pathology and has held the Singleton Chair for Food Animal Research since 1995.

Confer has been at Oklahoma State since 1981. He chaired the department of veterinary pathology from 1986 to 1996, and the department of anatomy, pathology and pharmacology from 1996 to 1999. He has served as associate dean since 1999.

Confer's research has focused primarily on livestock diseases.

He received two degrees from Oklahoma State: a B.S. in biological sciences (1971); and a D.V.M. (1972). He received an M.S. in veterinary pathology (1974) from Ohio State University and a Ph.D. in micro-biology (1978) from the University of Missouri, Columbia.

James Bloedel, ISU vice provost for research administration and chair of the search committee, said a second candidate will visit campus in April. Details will be announced prior to the candidate's visit. Bloedel said the search committee is trying to maintain confidentiality about candidates until a week to 10 days before their visits.

"We are trying to bring in the best possible candidates," he said. "In this case, that has required minimizing the length of time those names are available publicly."

Richard Ross served as dean of Veterinary Medicine from 1993 to July 2000, when he was named dean of the College of Agriculture. Norman Cheville, professor and former chair of veterinary pathology, is interim dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine.
