Commencement plans abound

by Debra Gibson

French scientist Jean Marie Dubois, a leading researcher in quasi-crystals who has collaborated with Iowa State and Ames Laboratory scientists, will be awarded an honorary doctorate of science degree during the fall undergraduate commencement ceremony Saturday, Dec. 16, in Hilton Coliseum.

Dubois, who is the director of research for the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris, also will give the address at the ceremony, which begins at 2 p.m. An estimated 1,362 undergraduate students will receive bachelor's degrees during the ceremony.

About 396 students will receive master's (297) or doctoral (99) degrees during an 8 p.m. ceremony on Friday, Dec. 15, in Stephens Auditorium. Richard Seagrave, interim president and distinguished professor of chemical engineering, will present the commencement address.

Tickets are not required for either ceremony.

Each of the undergraduate colleges will honor its students during a college-wide ceremony prior to the Hilton ceremony.

The ISU Student Alumni Leadership Council (formerly Student Alumni Association) will sponsor a pasta buffet luncheon for all undergraduate students and their guests from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the second-floor lobby of the Scheman Building. Ticket prices are $12.75 for adults and $6.50 for children ages 3 to 10. (Children under 3 eat free.) Tickets should be reserved by Monday, Dec. 11, by phoning 4-8488 or by purchasing them in 158 Memorial Union.
