Kwanzaa celebration is Dec. 2

Iowa State's fourth annual Kwanzaa celebration will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, in Fisher Theater.

The event is hosted by the ISU Minority Theatre Workshop. Kwanzaa performers will represent campus organizations, including the Masters of Dance Squad and D.A.V.I.D. Dance Group. Student vocalist Eric Ashby and violinist Sydnei Harris also will perform. Guest performers from Des Moines are Disciples Harvest Youth and Young People Praise.

Kwanzaa is a family holiday that serves as a celebration and affirmation of African American culture, said Shirley Basfield Dunlap, theater department. It was established in 1966 by Maulana Karenga, professor of Black Studies at California State University, Long Beach. Kwanzaa traditionally runs from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1.

The Iowa State celebration also will feature candle lighting by several young people. The candle lighters and their families will do a presentation on the "Nguzo Saba," a Swahili word for the seven principles upon which Kwanzaa is based. The principles are unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.
