ISU at 31 percent of United Way campaign goal

by Debra Gibson
Three weeks into their annual United Way campaign, Iowa State employees have pledged $67,159, according to Frankee Oleson, executive director of United Way of Story County.

That total, as of Sept. 29, puts the ISU campaign at 31 percent of its $215,000 goal. Richard Ross, dean of the College of Agriculture, chairs the fund-raising drive for Iowa State, which wraps up Friday, Oct. 20.

"Historically, the Iowa State community has surpassed its fund-raising goals for United Way, and I anticipate the same goodwill for this year's campaign," Ross said.

Some ISU affiliates have gone beyond filling out pledge cards to show their support. Following the campaign's official kickoff on Sept. 7, various organizations participated in county-wide service projects. Staff members from the College of Engineering helped clean and landscape a playground for Children's Services of Central Iowa. Employees of the ISU Foundation assisted with a project at the ACCESS (assault care) shelter. And members of the ISU Community Credit Union served a meal at the Heartland Senior Services Center and read to children at the University Community Childcare.

Again this year, ISU employees may pledge gifts for the Blitz Build 2000 project, sponsored by Story County Habitat for Humanity and the ISU 2000 Homecoming Community Service Committee. A single-family home will be constructed in Ames at 1127 Northwestern Ave. during ISU Homecoming Week, Oct. 16-21. According to Oleson, Blitz Build 2000 pledges (to be returned with the United Way pledges), will be distributed by United Way to Habitat for Humanity.

A total of 32 local agencies will benefit from the anticipated $900,000 raised during the 2000 campaign.
