Osborn gates back in use soon

by Debra Gibson
Your campus shortcut is about to hit a major roadblock.

Starting Monday, Oct. 9, the gates prohibiting vehicle traffic on Osborn Drive again will be in operation. According to Rob Bowers, department of public safety captain and university access control manager, the gates, which have not been functioning since May, have undergone a major equipment upgrade. New proximity cards (like those used to gain entrance into campus buildings) now will be required to lift the gates, which are located north of Coover and Agronomy halls.

However, Bowers reminds drivers that only promixity cards programmed for gate access will function with the new equipment. For those without the appropriate cards, an intercom will be in operation at the east gate (near the agronomy building) for requesting entry.

"Ours is still very much a pedestrian campus," Bowers said, "and with these gates not in operation, we've seen an extreme increase in vehicular traffic on campus. Our primary reason for using the gates is to protect pedestrians."

Questions may be directed to Bowers, 4-4428, or Doug Houghton, parking division program coordinator, 4-1987.
