The Fantasticks on campus

by Dave Gieseke, LAS Public Relations
The Fantasticks may be the longest running musical in the history of American theater, but it didn't hold any special appeal to Eve Himmelheber, assistant professor of theater.

"I had no interest in seeing the show," she said. "Then I saw a production in California a few years back and I was mesmerized. The simplicity of the show charmed me. The basic story of The Fantasticks is so solid that it touches you on so many levels."

This fall, Himmelheber is directing ISU Theatre's production of The Fantasticks, a story of a boy, a girl and their mothers -- who plot to get the two together by keeping them apart.

The musical is celebrating its 40th year on Broadway and features such classic songs as Try to Remember and Soon It's Gonna Rain. Tom Jones wrote the book and lyrics and Harvey Schmidt composed the music.

"The Fantasticks is a statement on the human condition," Himmelheber said. "The more I look at it, the more I fall in love with the characters and the story."

The Fantasticks, which will be Iowa State's entry in the American College Theatre Festival competition, opens a two-weekend run at Fisher Theater with 7:30 p.m. performances on Sept. 22-23 and 29-30. Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. are scheduled on Sept. 24 and Oct. 1.

Tickets are $12.50 for adults, $11 for senior citizens and $6.50 for students. Regular and season tickets to ISU Theatre productions can be purchased at the Iowa State Center Ticket Office and all TicketMaster outlets. Reservations can be made by calling 233-1888.
