Design auditorium to be dedicated

by Steve Sullivan
The College of Design will dedicate Threshold 2000, a $3 million capital improvement project, on Saturday, Sept. 9.

The dedication ceremony will be at 10 a.m. in the College of Designs new Kocimski Auditorium. Dedication speakers include Owen Newlin, president of the Board of Regents, State of Iowa; Richard Seagrave, interim ISU president; Mark Engelbrecht, Design dean; Stacy Cullison, Design development officer; and Anna Danneman, Design graduate student. Architects and ISU alumni William Chilton and Jon Pickard also will make brief comments. Their firm was among several that contributed to Threshold 2000.

Financial support for the project came from private gifts to Campaign Destiny, Iowa State's recently completed $458 million capital campaign, and $1 million of institutional funding.

Threshold 2000 includes a 250-seat auditorium, named in honor of Karol J. (an ISU professor of architecture for two decades) and Lila Furman Kocimski, who left their estate to the College of Design. The Lyle E. Lightfoot Forum, located in the atrium, includes the Cyber Cafe, Design Cafe and open study area. It was funded with a portion of a $1 million gift from Lightfoot, a 1945 graduate in architectural engineering.

The Florence Kies Fine Arts Studio, a suite of three studios used in design's drawing, painting and print-making program, was funded by Kies' estate. The Cowles Design X.PORT, an "electronic" conference center and distance learning facility, was funded with a $250,000 gift from the Gardner and Florence Call Cowles Foundation, Des Moines. The LoFT (Laboratories on Forward Technologies, whose primary component is the Durham Visualization Laboratory) includes student studios on the fifth floor.
