ISU eyed for Midwest Regional
An NCAA committee has recommended that Iowa State play host to the NCAA Women's Basketball Midwest Regional March 29-31, 2003. The recommendation will be submitted Sept. 12-14 for final NCAA approval.


Summer enrollment up
Summer enrollment at Iowa State is 9,200, up 309 from enrollment figures at this time last year. Undergraduate enrollment is 6,198, and graduate enrollment is 3,002.


Meyer named director
Arlo Meyer has been named director of business affairs. Meyer has been at Iowa State since 1979 and has served as manager of purchasing since 1988. Meyer succeeds Ron Santi, who recently retired.


More work at Reiman Gardens
Work has begun on Arboretum Gardens in the southwestern-most leg of Reiman Gardens. It will feature natural Iowa landscapes. Approximately 35 volunteer elm trees in the area adjacent to the intersection of Mortensen and Elwood were removed. A grove of white pines surrounding a Black Tupelo tree will be planted in the area. There also are plans to remove other volunteer trees along an area of the gardens adjacent to Beach Drive. Several Colorado spruce, Norway spruce and Canadian hemlock trees, and a grove of five different kinds of maples will be planted in the area. An existing line of seven sycamore trees will be preserved, as will the area's bull ring, a locust and other hardwood trees.


Conservatory architects
The names of the architects designing a conservatory project at Reiman Gardens was omitted from a June 30 article in Inside Iowa State. The architectural firm is Smith Metzger, Des Moines.


New professorship named
G. Premkumar, associate professor of management information systems (MIS), has been named the Union Pacific Professor of MIS. As part of the professorship, Premkumar will develop partnerships with Iowa businesses.


Economics chair named
Arne Hallam has been named chair of the department of economics. Hallam has held a number of administrative posts in the department, including director of graduate programs, director of undergraduate programs and interim department chair.


Architecture chair named
Calvin F. Lewis, a principal with Herbert Lewis Kruse Blunck Architecture, Des Moines, has been appointed professor and chair of the department of architecture. Lewis began his architectural career at Charles Herbert and Associates in 1970. He served as an adjunct professor of architecture at Iowa State in the mid-1980s.


Grant proposals sought
Grant proposals from P&S employees for student recruitment/retention projects this year are due by noon Friday, Aug. 4. The program funds or partially funds projects organized by P&S employees that are aimed at attracting and retaining students. This year's program will be funded by a $30,000 allocation from President Martin Jischke (subject to final budget approval by Board of Regents, State of Iowa). Grant recipients will be announced by Aug. 11. Proposals that involve collaboration across departments or units especially are encouraged. Iowa Games stay in Ames
Iowa State, the city of Ames and the Iowa Games have extended the agreement to hold the Iowa Games at Iowa State and throughout the Ames area through 2005. The Iowa Games is an Olympic-style sports festival that attracts more than 15,000 athletes for the summer competition. The event has been held in Ames for 14 years. Dates for the Iowa Games for the next two years are: July 20-22, 2001, and July 12-14, 2002.


New location
The Institutional Research office will relocate to 309 Beardshear while remodeling continues at Beardshear Hall. The move will take place July 24-25. For more information, check this Web site: www.inside.iastate.edu/beardshear/moves.html.


ISU Press set to merge
Iowa State University Press and Blackwell Science, an international scientific and technical publishing company, have signed a letter of intent to merge. The merger is expected to be effective by Sept. 1. Blackwell Science and ISU Press have worked closely for several years in veterinary, agriculture and other publishing areas. ISU Press will continue to operate from Ames and keep the ISUP imprint. Gretchen van Houten, editorial director, and Brenda O'Neall Smith, operations director, will remain in their positions. No change in the number of employees is expected.


ISU sells land
The Ames Community School District will pay $25,000 per acre for land in Ames owned by Iowa State and the Iowa State Foundation.

According to an agreement signed July 6-7, the 122.75 acres will be sold for a total $3,068,750. The land is north of Mortensen Road and west of State Street. The sale is subject to approval by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, and the Iowa Executive Council. The Iowa State Foundation owns 39.3 acres. Sale of that parcel was approved by the foundation's board of directors last week.
