Family theme year set

Iowa State will focus on families
during the 2000-2001 school year. "Strengthening Families To
Become the Best" is the theme for the coming year, President
Martin Jischke announced last week.
As part of its theme year cele-bration, Iowa State will sponsor the opening day of the Iowa State Fair on Aug. 10. Events that day will include a spirit rally and Iowa State displays on the fairground's Grand Concourse. ISU personalities will be on hand throughout the opening day at the fair. ISU Cyclone coaches Larry Eustachy, Bill Fennelly and Amy Pyle will be co-grand marshals for the Iowa State Fair parade in Des Moines on Aug. 9.
"The opening day of the state fair will showcase Iowa State's commitment to families and provide an absolutely wonderful opportunity for university alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends to come together for a 'cardinal and gold' day," Jischke said.
"We're thrilled to join with Iowa State in kicking off their exciting family year," said state fair manager Marion Lucas. "Parade activities and Iowa State's special day will help make the state fair's opening extra special, too."
Iowa State plans a year-long series of events built around the family theme.
Family night will be held at Jack Trice Stadium on Aug. 31 in conjunction with the first Cyclone football game of the 2000 season. Family night festivities, hosted by the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, will begin at 4:30 p.m. The night game will be played against Ohio University.
Family weekend will be held in conjunction with the Oct. 7 Cyclone football game against Nebraska. The theme for family weekend is "Proud Past, Strong Future: Uniting Cyclone Families."
The dedication of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences' new Palmer Human Development and Family Studies Building will be on Oct. 7. The Palmer building will house such facilities as the Child Development Lab School, and the family financial counseling and marriage and family clinics.
Iowa State's 2000 Homecoming will be Oct. 21. The ISU Alumni Association will sponsor an alumni tailgater for all ISU graduates and encourages alumni to hold family reunions on campus, said Jeff Johnson, alumni association executive director.
Throughout the year, university officials will make 10 community visits around Iowa, assisted byhost families with strong ISU ties. Host families will be announced at the opening day of the state fair. The visits will include town meetings to discuss how communities can strengthen families.
"Families have always been a focus of Iowa State," said Carol Meeks, dean of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences. "Through our extension and outreach programs, Iowa State has touched the lives of families in every community in Iowa. Next year's celebration is an opportunity to demonstrate what we've done, and find out how we're doing and what we need to do."
The family theme year follows previous celebrations focusing on technology and the accomplishments of ISU alumnus George Washington Carver.
