New P&T policy sees first use

Slightly more faculty this year were evaluated under the old promotion and tenure policy than the new one, Provost Rollin Richmond told the Faculty Senate April 11. Faculty hired before July 1, 1999, may choose under which policy they will be reviewed.

Thirty-seven faculty were reviewed under the old policy, compared to 32 under the new policy, Richmond said. Eleven of the 69 cases were denied.

The senate also considered a change in the class audit policy that would require students to obtain permission of the instructor for all audits and to enroll in audits during the first week of classes. The change is an effort to stop students failing a course from switching to audit status and then not showing up for class. Some students do this to keep their credit count high enough to qualify as full-time students.

The senate will vote on the proposal at its May 2 meeting.
