Proposed postal rate cha

nges may affect campus mailings

by Linda Charles
A proposed postal rate change could affect departments with big mailings.

The U.S. Postal Service has proposed a 1 cent increase for first-class and postcard stamps. Priority mail would increase from $3.20 to $3.45 for the first pound. Increases for bulk mailing would vary, with some rates going up and some down, said Bill Schmitt, printing services purchasing agent.

"Mailing at automation rates continues to be the lowest cost option," Schmitt said. "However, those rates were increased for letter-size mail, while some presort rates decrease under the proposal."

If approved, the rate increases would begin in January 2001. However, several mailing industry groups have challenged some of the proposed rates.

Printing services will revise its "Postal Update" fact sheet late this year when the rates are finalized. If you wish to receive the publication and are not already on the printing services customer list, call 4-3601.

Non-profit mail classifications frequently used on campus:

  Current (cents)   Proposed (cents)
Standard Letter
Automation 11.9   12.9
Presort 16.9   15.9
Standard flat
Automation 18.2   17.8
Presort 23.3   21.9
