Q: Our campus has both a Pammel Road and area (formerly) known as Pammel Court. Who are these named for?

A: Louis Pammel was a botanist and botany department chairman. He served on the Iowa State faculty from 1889 to 1931. One of his most devoted students was George Washington Carver, and what started out as a teacher-student relationship developed into one of friendship and professional collaboration until Pammel's death in 1931. The woods in the northwest corner of campus, bordered by Hyland Avenue and 13th Street, also are named for Pammel, as is an Iowa state park located in Madison County.
