Tech take

New cheese

One of the first patents to establish Iowa State in the global market dates back to 1937, when dairy microbiologists Clarence Lane and Bernard Hammer developed a blue cheese process using homogenized milk. Twenty companies used this process in their products and this now-standard industry technique produced more than $200,000 in royalties from 1940 to 1955, when the patent expired.
