by Linda Charles

The Iowa Games are coming to campus again this summer. About 16,000 athletes are expected to participate in the games July 16-18.

Opening ceremonies will begin at 8 p.m. Friday, July 16, in Jack Trice Stadium. The free ceremonies will include a Parade of Athletes, enter-tainment, bands and fireworks. A highlight of the ceremonies will be the completion of the Torch Run, with runners bringing the torch from Des Moines to light the Olympic-style cauldron.

Speakers will include vice president for student affairs Tom Hill and former ISU coach Johnny Orr. Keynote speaker will be Reggie White of the Green Bay Packers.

Preceding the ceremonies will be a Finals Fest and pizza party in the stadium's north parking lot. Events will start at 3:30 p.m. and will include sports demonstrations, games and a carnival-like atmosphere.

Pizza will be served, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Meal tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for children and include pizza, cookie and soft drink. All proceeds go to the Iowa Games.

A Family Night will follow opening ceremonies, beginning at 8 p.m. at the Scheman Building. There will be dances for teens and adults, and movies for children. This event also is free.

Competitions will be held in various locations on campus, in Ames and other central Iowa locations on Saturday from 8 a.m. until about 8 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. until about 5 p.m.
