New assistant dean of students arrives next week

Vernon A. Wall has been appointed assistant dean of students- student activities, effective Dec. 14.

In this position, Wall will manage the Student Activities Center in the Memorial Union and work closely with student organizations, including the Government of the Student Body and Veishea. Wall succeeds Terri Houston, who left the university to work on a doctoral degree in North Carolina.

"Vernon is recognized nationally in student affairs for his work with students, leadership and multi-culturalism issues," said Kathleen MacKay, dean of students. "He is actively sought as a speaker and workshop leader around the country."

Most recently, Wall served on the Student Life Team for the Institute for Shipboard Education ("Semester at Sea"), University of Pittsburgh. He supervised all aspects of student life, including student activities, recreation and discipline.

Wall also has served in student affairs positions at the University of Georgia, Athens; and the University of North Carolina, at both the Chapel Hill and Charlotte campuses.

He earned his B.A. in humanities from North Carolina State University, Raleigh, in 1981, and an M.S. in education from Indiana University, Bloomington, in 1983.
