John Dobson is interim LAS dean

by Steve Sullivan

John Dobson, associate vice provost for research and associate dean of the graduate college, has been named interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The appointment is effective July 1.

The search for a new permanent dean for the college recently was extended. The goal is to have dean candidates on campus in the fall and a new dean in the post by Jan. 1, 1999, said Provost John Kozak.

Dobson has been associate vice provost for research and associate dean of the graduate college since 1991. Previously, he was interim vice provost for research and interim dean of the graduate college (1991-92); assistant vice provost for research and advanced studies (1990-91); and assistant dean of the graduate college (1988-1991). He joined the ISU faculty as an assistant professor of history in 1968.

Former LAS dean Elizabeth Hoffman left Iowa State last fall.

Richard Hoffmann, associate dean and professor of zoology and genetics, has been serving as interim dean. Hoffmann accepted an appointment as dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Albany, State University of New York, beginning Aug. 1.
