Education dean finalists visit this month

by Anne Dolan

Campus visits have been scheduled this month for three finalists in the search for a new dean for the College of Education.

The finalists are Sandra Bowman Damico, professor and director of the Division of Educational Studies, Emory University, Atlanta; Walter Gmelch, interim dean of the College of Education, Washington State University, Pullman; and Les Sternberg, dean of the College of Education and Human Development, Bowling Green State University, Ohio (see the Nov. 21, 1997, issue of Inside for more information on each of the candidates).

Damico will be on campus Thursday and Friday, Jan. 15-16; Gmelch will visit Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 26-27; and Sternberg will visit Thursday and Friday, Jan. 29-30.

A fourth previously announced finalist, Paula Short from the University of Missouri, Columbia, has withdrawn from the search.

Each candidate will discuss "a vision for colleges of education at land-grant universities" and respond to questions at an open forum and reception. They also will take part in a diversity discussion that is open to the campus community.

Candidates also will meet with faculty in each department within the college, university administrators and graduate and undergraduate students.

Undergraduates should contact Suzy Craig, 296-2560, e-mail: scraig@ iastate.edu, for more information on their meeting time. Graduate students should contact Kim Linduska, 964-6628 (daytime), e-mail: kjlinduska@dmacc.cc.ia.us, for information on a lunch session with each candidate.
