LAS dean search has begun

by Linda Charles

The committee conducting a national search for a new dean for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is looking for a scholar to fill the position. The committee, which met for the first time Oct. 6, is chaired by Richard Ross, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine.

"We're seeking nominations and applications on a national and international level," Ross said. "But that does not preclude applicants from within Iowa State. The emphasis of the search is on someone with strong scholarship for this position."

Applications will be accepted through Dec. 1 or until the position is filled, Ross said. The committee hopes the position can be filled by July 1, 1998.

The new dean will succeed Elizabeth Hoffman, who accepted the position of provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Illinois, Chicago. She had served as dean since July 1993. Richard Hoffmann, professor of zoology and genetics and associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, is serving as interim dean of the college.

Nominations and applications may be sent to the Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean Search Committee, 107 Beardshear. Questions may be directed to Ross at rfross@iastate.edu.
