ISU Theatre kicks off season Oct. 3

by Linda Charles

ISU Theatre will offer a varied season this year, starting in October with The School for Scandal and ending in April with the Stars Over Veishea production of Sweet Charity. Here's a look at the coming season.

The School for Scandal, by Richard Brinsley Sheridan, is about two brothers pursuing the same woman, one for love and one for money. Presented Oct. 3-12.

The Voice of the Prairie, by John Olive, is the story of a radio personality and his promoter, intertwined with flashbacks of the radio personality as young boy on the lam with a blind girl. Presented Oct. 17-19.

Schoolhouse Rock Live!, based on the TV series, features all the favorite Emmy Award-winning songs, including Conjunc-tion Junction, Interjections, My Hero, Zero and Three is a Magic Number. Performances will be Nov. 14-16 and Dec. 5-7.

Pentecost, by David Edgar, starts with the discovery of a long-hidden fresco that could revolutionize the history of western art. A battle over authorship, ownership and the meaning of the painting ensues as the play confronts major cultural, national and historical questions. Presented Feb. 20-March 1.

T Bone N Weasel, by Jon Klein, is a serious comedy about race and friendship. Two young ex-convicts, T Bone, who is African American, and Weasel, who is white, steal a decrepit Buick and set off across South Carolina. Presented March 26-29.

Sweet Charity, by Neil Simon, is the poignant story of a "dance-hall hostess" who gives her heart (and earrings) to the wrong man. Songs in the musical include I'm a Brass Band, Something Better Than This, If My Friends Could See Me Now and Hey Big Spender. This is a music department and ISU Theatre production and will be shown April 17-19, during Veishea.

Most productions begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday in Fisher Theater. Season tickets are $35 ($30 for seniors) and on sale through Oct. 12 at the Iowa State Center box office and TicketMaster locations.
