New FCS dean named

Carol B. Meeks, professor and chair of the department of housing and consumer economics, University of Georgia, Athens, has been named dean of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, effective Aug. 21.

"Carol Meeks will be an outstanding leader in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences," said President Martin Jischke. "She has extensive experience at land--grant universities and is a nationally recognized expert on family housing issues. She also has held significant leadership positions in national organizations."

Meeks will succeed Beverly Crabtree, who stepped down as dean June 30. Crabtree has returned to the faculty in the family and consumer sciences education and studies department. Dianne Draper, associate dean for research and graduate education in the college, has been serving as interim dean since July 1.

Meeks joined the faculty at the University of Georgia in 1985. Prior to that, she taught at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. She served five years as supervisory economist and housing section head for the economic development division of the economic research service unit of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Meeks also served as a research fellow for the National Institute for Consumer Research in Oslo, Norway.

Meeks has done extensive work in manufactured housing regulation and wrote the oft-cited textbook, Housing.

She has held numerous national posts including president of the American Assn. of Housing Educators, member of the board of directors of the American Council on Consumer Interests, member of the HUD National Manufactured Home Advisory Council, chair of the National Assn. of Home Builders Research Centers University Consortium, member of the National Institute of Building Science and member of the board of directors of the Society of Government Economists.

In 1996, Meeks received the Leader Award from the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.

Meeks received a B.S. in education, M.S. in management and housing, and Ph.D. in consumer economics and housing, all from The Ohio State University, Columbus.
