by Steve Sullivan
John McCarroll, manager of media relations and financial communications for MidAmerican Energy Co., Des Moines, has been named director of university relations. He will start April 14.

As director, McCarroll will coordinate media relations; oversee the news service, internal communications and photo service; serve as primary media spokesperson; and work with key administrators on public relations matters.

"John McCarroll brings years of experience and leadership in business and media relations to the position of director of university relations at Iowa State University," said Murray Blackwelder, vice president for external affairs. "He knows Iowa very well as a result of his work in industry and government. His experiences will be a great asset to Iowa State."

McCarroll has been manager of media relations at MidAmerican Energy Co. since November 1989. He was director of communications for the Iowa Association of Business and Industry from 1982 to 1989, and administrative assistant and press secretary to former Iowa Gov. Robert D. Ray from 1981 to 1982. McCarroll also held various positions in print and broadcast media.

He earned a B.S. in journalism from the University of Missouri, Columbia.

McCarroll succeeds Cherryl Jensen, who left ISU in 1994. John Anderson has served as interim director.
