Committee seeks input on renaming football stadium

by Diana Pounds
A forum to seek public input on a proposal to rename Cyclone Stadium/Jack Trice Field to Jack Trice Stadium will begin at 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, in 118 Horticulture (the auditorium).

The Government of the Student Body proposes renaming the stadium for Trice, an Iowa State athlete who died as a result of injuries he received while playing in a football game at Minnesota in 1923. The forum is sponsored by The Advisory Committee on the Naming of Buildings and Streets, led by Vice Provost for Research and Advanced Studies Patricia Swan. The advisory committee has been studying and seeking input on the proposal for several months.

In addition to the forum, individuals can comment on the proposal by:

The committee will make a recommendation on the proposal to President Martin Jischke. Any proposal to name a campus facility or street after an individual must be approved by the State Board of Regents.

Trice was ISU's first black athlete. A note written the night before the fatal football game became part of his legacy. It states: "The honor of my race, family and self is at stake. Everyone is expecting me to do big things. I will."
