Finalists named for Energy Center

Three finalists have been named so far in the search for a new director of the Iowa Energy Center and will visit campus this month. They are Floyd Barwig, manager of building energy programs for the Pacific Northwest Laboratory, Richland, Wash.; John Lamont, director of Iowa State's Electric Power Research Center; and David Whitson, vice president of customer and sales engineering at the Synergic Resources Corp. (SRC), Oconomowoc, Wis.

The new director will succeed John Cummings, who retired June 30, 1995. The Iowa Energy Center was established by the Iowa Legislature in 1990 to find ways to help Iowans reduce their reliance on imported fuels and non-renewable resources, and to increase the efficiency of all kinds of energy use.

Barwig has been with the Pacific Northwest Laboratory since 1993. He previously served as director of the Technical Services Bureau for the New York State Energy Office.

He received the bachelor of architecture (1969) from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, N.Y., and the master of architecture (1971) from the University of California, Berkeley.

Lamont, professor of electrical and computer engineering, has served as director of the Electric Power Research Center since 1988. He also is the extension coordinator for electric utilities and professor-in-charge of the Iowa Test and Evaluation Facility.

Lamont received the B.S. (1964) in electrical engineering from the University of Missouri, Rolla, and the M.S. (1966) and Ph.D. (1970) in electrical engineering from the University of Missouri, Columbia.

Before assuming his current position with SRC, Whitson was director and vice president of the Midwest region for the company. He served as vice president for consulting services of Morgan Systems Corp., which was purchased by SRC. Previously, he was market manager of the Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (California), and manager of engineering services for The ANCO Consulting Group (Wisconsin).

Whitson received the B.S. (1980) in agriculture engineering from the University of California, Davis.
