Faculty Senate: Topic selected for spring conference

by Linda Charles

Graduate education and research will be the focus of the annual spring faculty conference, Faculty Senate vice president Joanna Courteau told the senate during its Dec. 5 meeting.

Cornelius Pings, president of the American Association of Universities, will be the keynote speaker for the conference, which will be held March 22-23, 1996, at Grinnell College.

The planning committee is seeking topics for the three panels and discussion groups that are part of the conference. Faculty will be invited to sign up for the conference in January, Courteau added.

Other businessCourse list. The senate approved a list of courses that can be used to remove unmet high school requirements.

Undergraduate education. Senators were asked to gather ideas from their constituents on ways to improve undergraduate education. Those ideas will be forwarded to associate provost Ed Lewis, whose position has been redefined to focus on improving the undergraduate education experience (see related story).

NCAA annual conference. Norman Boyles, interim associate dean in the College of Education, reported that NCAA delegates will vote on restructuring the governing units of the NCAA during the annual meeting in January. The restructuring would create an executive committee of university presidents and CEOs. Division I schools also would have a board of directors of university presidents and CEOs, plus a management council of athletic directors and managers. The other divisions would have slightly different structures. Boyles said Iowa State favors the restructuring, which would take effect after the January 1997 annual meeting.

There also are likely to be attempts at the NCAA meeting to change Proposition 16, which goes into effect in August 1996. Proposition 16 raises admission standards for student athletes. Some who currently are qualifiers would only be partial qualifiers under Proposition 16. Iowa State does not admit partial qualifiers, Boyles said. He added that Iowa State representatives probably will vote against any attempts to amend the proposition. Memorial resolutions. The senate remembered the following faculty who died during the past year: Harold DuWaine Baker, Alice Davis, William H. Hastings, Byron H. Thomas, Clair B. Watson and Harley Almey Wilhelm.

The next Faculty Senate meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, in 2532 Veterinary Medicine.
