Tons of phone books recycled

Iowa State employees recycled 13,260 pounds (that's 6.63 tons) of phone books in a campus effort last month. On Nov. 11, volunteer staff members Dennis Erickson, Gloria Erickson, Norm Hill, James Joyner and John Sluis, along with 10 volunteer students, collected 6,840 pounds of phone books along five campus routes.

Because US West directories were delivered to campus later, a collection bin was set up on campus through Nov. 27 so departments still could recycle old phone books. The ISU Recycling Committee also arranged for several second pick-ups at buildings. This second round netted an additional 6,420 pounds of books.

A year ago, the campus community recycled 5,980 pounds of phone books. The directories are returned to their publishers, who recycle the contents to produce more phone books.
