The lecture is titled, "Student Learning: What Works." His research focuses on how college affects students, student persistence and retention, and the influence of informal student-faculty interaction on student learning. COMPOSER VISITS Internationally renowned composer Libby Larsen will discuss her recent works and the process of composing during a lecture at 1:10 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, in the Recital Hall, Music Building. Larsen also will work with the music department's student composers and attend several classes and rehearsals. She is in central Iowa for the premiere of her new symphonic work, Blue Fiddler, which will be performed by the Des Moines Symphony Nov. 11 and 12. Her Sonnets From the Portuguese is featured on the 1995 Grammy Award-winning CD The Art of Arleen Auger. Her opera, Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus, was selected as one of the eight best classical music events of 1990 by USA Today. CONFERENCE HONORS H. A. DAVID A conference in honor of the 70th birthday of Herbert A. David, distinguished professor in statistics, is being sponsored by the department of statistics. David served as department head and director of the Statistical Laboraratory from 1972 to 1984. The conference will be held from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at the Best Western Starlite Village Motel and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at the Holiday Inn Gateway Center. The keynote speaker will be statistician Sir David R. Cox, a fellow of the Royal Society of London. The $60 registration fee includes lunch on Saturday. MEMORIAL SERVICE A brief memorial ceremony will be held at noon Thursday, Nov. 16, to remember the students and staff who died 10 years ago in a plane crash returning from the 1985 NCAA Cross Country Championship. The ceremony will be held near the finish line of the new cross country course, at the corner of Hayward Avenue and Mortensen Road, directly across from the Towers residence halls. The stone and plaque that were dedicated to the three student athletes, student trainer, two coaches and pilot will be relocated to the finish area of the new course.
