Inside Iowa State Oct. 27, 1995 POMERANTZ TO SPEAK TO FACULTY SENATE by Linda Charles State Board of Regents president Marvin Pomerantz will be a guest of the Faculty Senate during the Nov. 7 meeting. "This is something many of the senators are looking forward to," said senate president Ron Peters. "We don't always have the opportunity to reach the president of the board of regents directly." Pomerantz is chairman and chief executive officer of both Gaylord Container Corp. and Mid-America Group. He founded Great Plains Bag Corp. and has served as its president and general manager for more than 14 years. He previously served on the board of regents and was reappointed by the governor to a one-year term this year. "Pomerantz is a strong advocate of education in Iowa," Peters said. "Even though he has been controversial, he takes education seriously." Pomerantz is expected to speak for about 15 minutes, followed by a 20- to 30-minute period for questions, Peters said. The senate then will recess for a 15- to 30-minute reception to allow senators to talk individually with Pomerantz. Following the reception, the senate will reconvene. Peters is soliciting issues and concerns that faculty would like to have presented to Pomerantz. "I know we can't address all the concerns of every individual faculty member, but if we can get a consensus, we can spend some time on the major issues," he said. Faculty who have issues they would like discussed should contact Peters at the senate office, 4-9717, or through e- mail at rhpeters@iastate.edu. Peters also reminded faculty and staff that the senate meeting is open to the public. "Anyone who would like to attend is welcome," he said. In other business, the senate will consider a request to change the name of the interdepartmental program of "transportation planning" to "transportation." The change would be consistent with names of similar programs at other universities. The senate also will consider two minor revisions to the current university conflict of interest policy that went into effect Oct. 1. Both revisions will bring the university's conflict of interest policy in line with National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation policies. The Tuesday, Nov. 7, senate meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. in 2532 Veterinary Medicine. __________ University Relations Iowa State University
